Description
Brown Sugar Guo Kui is a delightful treat made with a sweet filling of brown sugar and optional nuts, encased in a soft, chewy dough.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup warm water (about 110°F)
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup brown sugar (for filling)
- 1/4 cup chopped nuts (optional, such as walnuts or pecans)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix well.
- Gradually add the warm water and vegetable oil to the dry ingredients, stirring until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- After resting, divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball.
- Flatten each ball into a circle about 1/4 inch thick.
- In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar and chopped nuts (if using). Sprinkle a generous amount of the filling onto the center of each circle.
- Fold the edges of the dough over the filling to enclose it, pinching to seal tightly.
- Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Place the filled dough seam-side down in the skillet.
- Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through.
- Remove from the skillet and let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- To enhance the flavor, consider adding a pinch of cinnamon to the filling.
- For a savory variation, replace the brown sugar with finely chopped green onions and a sprinkle of sesame seeds.
