  1. Rinse the lentils thoroughly under cold water in a fine-mesh strainer.
  2. In a large pot, heat oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and minced garlic; sauté for about 5 minutes.
  3. Add ground cumin and chili spice; stir well for about 1 minute.
  4. Pour in the canned diced tomatoes and vegetable broth; bring to a rolling boil.
  5. Stir in the rinsed lentils; reduce heat to low, cover, and let simmer for 25 to 30 minutes.
  6. Check for doneness; they should be tender but not mushy. Adjust cooking time if necessary.
