Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pounds flank steak or sirloin sliced into 1-inch thick pieces
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish optional
  • Grated Parmesan cheese for serving optional

Method

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Season the steak pieces with salt and pepper.
  3. Add the steak to the skillet and sear for about 3-4 minutes on each side until browned. Remove the steak from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add minced garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Pour in the crushed tomatoes, then stir in the oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), and season with salt and pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer.
  6. Return the steak to the skillet, spooning some of the sauce over the top. Cover and reduce the heat to low.
  7. Let it simmer for about 20-25 minutes, or until the steak is tender and cooked through.
  8. Serve the steak hot, garnished with fresh basil leaves and grated Parmesan cheese if desired.
